For months the market has been obsessed with AI, rate cuts, and the soft-landing narrative.
\nNow oil is reminding everyone that the world still runs on energy.<\/p>\n

Crude has surged back toward $100 a barrel, driven not by demand surprises but by geopolitics specifically the escalating conflict involving Iran and the growing disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important oil chokepoints on the planet.<\/p>\n

When the Strait sneezes, the global economy catches a cold.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This Isn\u2019t Just Another Oil Spike<\/p>\n

The recent move in oil isn\u2019t coming from the usual OPEC headlines or a routine supply adjustment.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s coming from actual disruptions.<\/p>\n

Attacks on tankers and energy infrastructure across the Gulf have raised serious concerns about the flow of oil through the region, a route that normally carries around one-fifth of global oil supply.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why the move in oil has been so sharp.<\/p>\n

Markets don\u2019t mind higher prices.
\nThey hate uncertainty about supply.<\/p>\n

And right now, the supply picture is getting murky.<\/p>\n

Governments Are Already Reaching for the Emergency Tools<\/strong><\/p>\n

The International Energy Agency has coordinated a massive emergency release of strategic reserves roughly 400 million barrels in an attempt to stabilise the market.<\/p>\n

For the past year markets have been celebrating the idea that inflation is fading, and central banks will soon be cutting rates.<\/p>\n

A sustained oil rally complicates that story very quickly.<\/p>\n

Energy feeds into everything:<\/p>\n

\u2022 transport<\/p>\n

\u2022 manufacturing<\/p>\n

\u2022 agriculture<\/p>\n

\u2022 aviation<\/p>\n

Even a moderate rise in oil can ripple through the entire inflation picture.<\/p>\n

Central banks don\u2019t like cutting rates when energy prices are climbing.<\/p>\n

Equity Markets Are Still Pretending Nothing Happened<\/strong><\/p>\n

So far, equities are reacting with the usual mix of optimism and denial.<\/p>\n

Stocks wobble when oil spikes\u2026 then quickly convince themselves it\u2019s temporary.<\/p>\n

But history is fairly clear on this point: sustained oil shocks eventually show up in growth, inflation, or both.

1. Inflation expectations<\/p>\n

If energy starts pushing inflation higher again, rate cuts get pushed further out.<\/p>\n

2. Credit markets<\/p>\n

Energy shocks tend to show up here before they show up in equities.<\/p>\n

3. Shipping flows through Hormuz<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the real story. Everything else is noise.<\/p>\n

If the Strait stabilises, oil settles down.<\/p>\n

If it doesn\u2019t, markets may have badly underestimated this risk.<\/p>\n

The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/p>\n

Markets spent the last six months worrying about technology disruption.<\/p>\n

Now they\u2019re being reminded about geopolitical disruption.<\/p>\n

Oil doesn\u2019t need to hit $150 to matter.<\/p>\n

It just needs to stay high long enough to ruin the comfortable narratives investors have been relying on.<\/p>\n

And right now, that\u2019s starting to look like a real possibility.<\/p>\n
